Galveston is a coastal city in Texas that offers a variety of attractions and activities for visitors. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or a beach lover, this charming city has something to offer everyone. If you’re looking for a fun and exciting weekend getaway, Galveston is the perfect destination even when the weather isn't perfect. lol
Even though we have been to Galveston many times when we were growing up in Texas, we still love going. So, when JW came to see me again in TX for Thanksgiving, he wanted to go to Galveston. What I didn't know was he had a different reason for wanting to go there, (more on that later.)
A main highlight of Galveston is its beaches. Miles of sandy shores invite you to relax under the warm Texan sun, take a dip in the refreshing Gulf of Mexico waters, or enjoy beach activities like volleyball and frisbee. Stewart Beach and East Beach (R.A. Apffel Park) in Galveston, TX are two popular spots where you can find amenities such as restrooms, showers, and even food vendors. If you’re looking for a more secluded spot, explore the West End beaches to escape the crowds and enjoy a peaceful day by the ocean. We chose to stay on the seawall at the DoubleTree Hotel in Galveston on the Beach (hilton.com) DoubleTree is owned by Hilton so, he was able to use his honor rewards. DoubleTree hotels are usually more upper scale than Hampton Inn's with bolder color decor, spas, and upscale onsite restaurants and bars.
Apart from its beaches, Galveston has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The city is home to several fascinating historical sites, such as the Bishop's Palace, Moody Mansion, the historic district known as The Strand, and the 1877 ELISSA at the Galveston Historic Seaport - Galveston Historical Foundation (galvestonhistory.org) the authentic tall ship named "Elissa" which I had been a crew member of when I was in Texas, is a must see. The Bishop's Palace, a Victorian-style mansion, is a must-see attraction for architecture enthusiasts. Moody Mansion offers a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the Moody family, while The Strand features well-preserved buildings from the late 1800s that now house unique shops, restaurants, bars, and art galleries. I have seen many of these myself and JW has seen a few of them as well. However, on this trip, we were looking for something specific, a country bar where we could finally two-step together. lol
You would think that wouldn't be hard to find but, even in Texas, it can be hard to do. We got lucky and managed to find one. The Buckshot Saloon and it was worth it. If you like country music, then give them a try. I had wanted to go see my beloved Elissa however, the weather wasn't cooperating. The rain did stop just long enough for us to take a walk down the seawall and view the ocean, shops, and pier. As we walked my belove was quieter than usual, he said he was fine just upset about the weather. We stopped in for a bite to eat at the Gaido's seafood restaurant. Gaido first opened his doors to the beach-going public in 1911. They still prepare their food just like they use too, local, fresh, and with southern/creole infused style. They have stood strong through hurricanes and society changes and still have the popularity as the freshest fish house on the Gulf.
For nature lovers, Galveston provides ample opportunities to explore its natural beauty. The Galveston Island State Park is a nature reserve that offers activities like fishing, birdwatching, kayaking, and hiking. The park is home to diverse ecosystems, including dunes, marshland, and beachfront, providing a habitat for various bird species and marine life. I have been there many times and camped there as well. We didn't go this time but, one day I hope to go back.
I had often taken my kids to Galveston just as my parents had taken me and my husband's parents had taken him so, if you're traveling with kids, Galveston also has plenty of family-friendly attractions. The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is a waterfront amusement park with thrilling rides, carnival games, and delicious food options. The Galveston Railroad Museum is another popular spot, where kids can explore vintage locomotives and learn about the history of the railroad. Moody Gardens is a family resort which has many attractions including a rainforest, aquarium, theaters, spas, and golf course. You can choose to stay and play or just go play. For those that may want to be in water but don't like sand there is the water park Schlitterbahn. We have not personally gone to it. However, it's on the list and if we get to it, we will do a review.
All in all, we had a really good time on our two-day trip even though the weather wasn't that good.
Oh, and I said I would get back to you on what my darlins reasoning for wanting to go to Galveston was. I didn't find out until the next day after we left Galveston. We were back in Brenham Tx, and I had to go see my sister alone because he was sick. when I got back to the hotel, he asked me to marry him and of course I said yes!! later he told me he had planned to ask me on the beach at sunset, but it wasn't working, and he was thinking of waiting until he saw me again, but he couldn't wait. Yes, you can say AWE!!! now. lol
